I am Maeve O’Briant, an American expat living out her dream in South East England. I grew up in Seattle, Washington before moving to study at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. There I completed two years of Fine Art studies before transferring to the University of Sussex in order to pursue an Art History Degree. This decision allowed me to continue my passion for research which informs my artistic practice. I see the two as intimately connected and so I use this space to communicate both.
Research excites me. I love to identify patterns and understand behaviour, the next step being to synthesise this into a fresh strategy. My love of research stems from my studies as well, and particularly from my dissertation, “Medical-Humanist Methods of Accessing the Experience of Endometriosis Through Visual Material”. This project was a research-dense survey on the current lack of emotionality in the understanding of endometriosis, in order to promote a more accurate representation based on the visual trends of sufferers online. Having studied hundreds of online forums and support groups across various social media platforms, I collected evidence of trending visual practices in order to understand the sense of culture and community that has grown within the endometriosis community. Harnessing these visual tools, I identified specific ways in which a humanist approach to endometriosis treatment and diagnosis would fill many gaps in the under-researched field.
In August 2022 I launched an Instagram account dedicated to healing the emotional site of endometriosis through mindfulness, @mindyourendo. Within 3 months I acquired nearly 1K followers organically, simply through strong content creating and authentic community building.
Long term, I know that I want to share meaningful messages. This is my ultimate goal, and it is why I paint, write, share research, and post on social media. I want to contribute positively to the world and I believe my strength in visual communication is how I will achieve that.
